Urban Shades community garden is a communal garden without plots where people from all walks of life can get together to work on the entire area once a week, and share and take home produce when there is. We are calling it the “Urban Shades Community Garden” as the location is subject to some shade.

The garden is located at the backyard of All Saints Anglican Church at the Intersection of Laurier Avenue and Blackburn Avenue.

We are holding SUNDAY WORK BEES at 2pm at the garden starting from August 10th, 2014. WORK BEES are scheduled times when the community gets together to work on the garden.  Anyone and Everyone is welcome to drop by and participate. If you would like to try your skills at gardening, learn some tips, or plain just get to know your neighbour, this is the spot for you.

The project is initiated by Faith House Ottawa and supported by All Saints Sandy Hill, City Councillor Mathieu Fleury, Action Sandy Hill Community Association, EnviroCentre, Sandy Hill Community Health Centre, and many residents.

We are funded $7000 by the City of Ottawa through the Community Garden Development Fund (http://justfood.ca/community-gardening-network/community-garden-development-fund/). An additional $2000 was given to do compulsory soil tests. Thank you to Just Food for helping us coordinate the application process.

As there are contaminants present on the soil in site (As with most sites in Ottawa downtown) – We have built RAISED BEDS.
